How many devices in a dev kit?
Each dev kit comes with two devices. For larger orders, talk to us.
Software/programmability
What can I do with it?
You can get inspired by our list of suggested scenarios here and our tutorial.
How can I program it?
The LTE Beacon can be programmed using the Estimote Web IDE, in Estimote Cloud. Sign up for an account or log in.
Do I need SDKs?
Only if you’re going to use it for proximity-based experiences, and detect it with mobile devices. That is the only situation where you’ll need to use a phone running an app with Estimote Proximity SDK.
Where can I find the API reference?
The API reference is available here, and the tutorial for programming the LTE Beacon is available here.
Can I adjust the broadcasting frequency? What about other settings?
You can configure all of the beacon’s settings using a micro-app composed in the Web IDE.
Can I program the beacon without the cloud?
No, Estimote Web IDE is the only way to program the LTE Beacon.
Can I use those beacons if I’m not a dev?
This device requires some programming experience. You can try one of our demos and template apps, but you will need to be able to read the code to run anything customized.
Can the device store messages or other data if there is no cellular coverage and send that later?
Yes, the LTE Beacon has 1 MB of storage, which can be used to store data offline.
What are the default broadcasting settings of the LTE beacon?
There are no default settings. You can program it to broadcast any data you choose.
Battery life
What’s the battery life?
The battery lasts 2 years with the default heartbeat settings and no micro-app running. The specifics will depend on the app you’re running.
What is the battery capacity?
The capacity is 800 mAh. You can recharge it, or even use a USB-C power-bank.
How can I charge the battery? How long does it take?
The LTE Beacon can be charged using a USB-C cable. The USB-C port is available on the side of the enclosure.
Hardware
Is it sensitive to moisture or waterproof?
The LTE Beacon is water resistant and is rated IP67.
Is there a USB-C cable in the box?
No, the dev kit doesn’t include a USB-C cable.
Subscription details
How much is the subscription?
The subscription starts at $2 per device per month and includes the data plan.
Do I get a free trial?
Each device gets a free 3-month trial, no subscription fee needed.
Does the subscription fee apply to all devices simultaneously, or can I select which devices are covered by the subscription, and which aren’t?
Devices without an active subscription will not be able to work with LTE connectivity. For more information, see our Subscription details article.
When does the subscription start?
The subscription term starts when you receive your dev kit.
Are you charging up front for a month/billing period?
Correct. We charge you on the first day of the subscription period.
LTE / Data coverage / SIM
What’s the connection speed?
LTE-M (LTE Cat-M1) and NB-IoT speeds are lower than typical LTE transfer rates, but both more than fast enough for IoT applications. The specific transfer rates will depend on the area and provider capabilities.
Will it work in my country? If not, when will it be available?
New countries continue to roll out LTE Cat-M1 and NB-IoT-compatible infrastructure. You can check with your local operators to make sure. We’ll do our best to help, too.
Are there roaming charges?
No, if LTE-M works in your country, it’ll be based on the local infrastructure, which means there’s no roaming involved.
